03devils_golf_course.jpg There might be nowhere else in the world with so many alluvial fans. Here is one at the far side of the Devil's Golf Course. These fans contribute to the development and maintenance of the Devil's Golf Course. An alluvial fan is formed when storms bring rain to the parched hard mountain's surface. As it runs down the mountainside, the rain picks up bits of soil and then flows further down the slope. You can actually see the results of different rainstorms on the face of the fan. Eventually, the rainwater reaches the Valley floor, bringing moisture to the salt flat and Devil's Golf Course. This moisture carries tiny amounts of minerals from the mountains and it also brings more salt up from the soil adding to Devil's Golf Course fanciful shapes and appearance.
