A few of the Sights around Banff, AB, Canada

At first, the community of Banff felt like a number of ski towns Fred and I had visited during our travels. It was, pleasantly, something like deja vu all over again -up-scale art galleries and funky restaurants, the tourist buses loaded with their multi-national passengers, psuedo-Bavarian architecture, and amazing displays of colorful flowers. Our first stop was at the Information Center in the middle of town (the shuttle bus from our campground made it easy) where we learned about all there was to do. The suggested Banff Historical Walking Tour provided us with great insight to Banff's history and culture. One huge difference we found between the ski towns in the United States and Banff was the make-up of the founders. In the United States many of today's ski towns started as pit mining boomtowns. In Canada, it seems places like Banff were started by folks connected to the railroad industry and with a vision of the future. It was railroad money that promoted tourism in the area to the world. Even today, the railroad provides many with access to this quaint town nestled in the middle of some fabulous country. It didn't take us long to realize there was a great deal more to Banff than beautiful surroundings.
