Bear left onto Billy Creek Rd. and go 0.1 miles into campground.
NOTE: Last 0.7 miles are gravel and rough.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 850 ft.
The campground is a short spur with a teardrop loop. The
teardrop shape means a second pass-through for recreational
vehicle will be difficult. The campground is adjacent to Billy
Creek with some sites overlooking the creek. A mix of mature
hardwood and pine provide ample shade. A few sites have pedestal
grilles while others only have stone fire rings. The dirt and
grass understory provide little privacy between sites. The
campground has an under-maintained appearance.

CAMPGROUND NAME: Cedar Lake
VISIT DATE: 03/23/1997
UPDATE DATE: 8/2/2010
STATE: Oklahoma
REGION: Southern
RANGER DISTRICT: Choctaw
NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Hodgen
RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation
DIRECTIONS:
From Hodgen, OK, take US Rt. 270 south 5.5 miles to Cedar Lake
Recreation Area sign (Holson Valley Rd.). Turn right onto Holson
Valley Rd. and go 2.8 miles to Winding Stair Recreation Area -
Cedar Lake sign (Forest Rt. 7269). Turn right onto Rt. 7269 and
go 0.7 miles to another Winding Stair Recreation Area sign. Just
past the sign, turn left to the Sandy Beach and Shady Lane
sections or continue straight to the North Shore section.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 900 ft.
NOTE: Cedar Lake Equestrian Camp is in the same contiguous area.
Cedar Lake is one of three campgrounds in the Winding Stair
National Recreation Area and is composed of three sections,
a.k.a. loops - North Shore, South Shore/Sandy Beach and Shady
Lane. Shady Lane is a single loop winding through a stand of
mixed hardwoods, including oak and ironwood, and is the most
developed; Cedar Lake is nearby. These campsites have electric
and water hookups and some also have sewer. A small playground
is located near the bathhouse. Sandy Beach, once South Shore,
stretches along Cedar Lake's shoreline with electric and water
hookups that are included in the walk-in tent sites. Most
campsites in Sandy Beach have a view of the Lake with a swim
beach and small playground included. North Shore, although
recently renovated, has retained most of its CCC (Civilian
Conservation Corps) character. Heavily wooded, it could be
considered the prettiest section in the campground. It has sites
closest to Cedar Lake, a boat ramp and a fishing pier. Sites 66
through 72 are on a tight loop across from the North Shore Picnic
area and not recommended for large RVs. It provides the best
example of what the "old" Cedar Lake campground was like when
built by the CCC in the 1930s. Considering the entire
campground, one can experience just about any type of camping
from rustic/primitive to modern.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 600 ft.
NOTE: Cedar Lake campground is in the same contiguous area.
Cedar Lake Equestrian Camp, located close the 86-acre Cedar Lake,
is one of three campgrounds in the Winding Stair National
Recreation Area. Between the facilites and almost 100 miles of
horse trails, this campground has got to be the "Cadillac" of
horse camps. There are hitching posts all over the place and
ample room for horses at each site. Most every campsite has a
12' X 12' steel pole corral. Several "wash racks" have been
installed so horses can enjoy a good wash. The campground has
four loops designated D, E, F, and G. Shortly after entering the
campground, there is Loopl D on the left side. This is a loop
with undesignated sites. Although horse trailers can park there,
it appears to be intended for overnight trail riders. There is
also a large pavilion in Level D. Loop E has both sites with no
hookups and sites with electric and water hookups as well as a
combination of back-in and pull thru sites. This loop is the
most open and sunny with only fair privacy. Loop F has mostly
back-in campsite sites, ample shade and good privacy. Loop G
features lots of pull-thru parking aprons (some tight) and good
privacy. Numerous connector trails link the campground with the
many trails in the Winding Stair National Recreation Area.

CAMPGROUND NAME: Charlton
VISIT DATE: 04/01/1997
UPDATE DATE: 4/12/2012
STATE: Arkansas
REGION: Southern
RANGER DISTRICT: Caddo/Womble
NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Crystal Springs
RESERVATIONS: No
DIRECTIONS:
From Crystal Springs, AR, take US Rt. 270 west for 3 miles to
campground on the right.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 700 feet.
The campground has a single loop, identified as Loop A, on a hill top.
Loop A is close to the day-use area that has a premier man-made swimming
hole on Walnut Creek with a large grassy beach, abundant shade and picnic
facilities. The loop has retained much of its CCC characteristics. Close
to Rt. 270, some traffic noise can be heard in some campsites. Separation
between campsites, rather than vegetation, provides good privacy. Mature
mixed hardwoods provide lots of shade.
Lake Quachita, about four miles northeast of the campground, is a popular
destination for boaters. Charlton swim area and bathhouse were constructed by
the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1935 and 1938. It
remains a very popular destination.
The area was homesteaded in 1850. The campground is named for
one of Arkansas' first federal lawman who lived in this area. An
interesting day trip is driving to the Lake Ouachita Vista on Hickory
Nut Mtn. (N34 33.858, W93 25.601). Drive west on US Rt. 270, 2.8
miles to Hickory Nut Mtn. Rd. Turn right and go about 4 miles on a
gravel road to the Vista and a gorgeous view of Lake Ouachita. Bring
your camera and a picnic lunch.
NOTE: Loops B and C were heavily damaged during a storm in 2011 and are
closed indefinitely.
