From Almont, CO, take State Rt. 135 south 0.7 miles to campground
sign.  Turn left at sign into campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 8,000 ft.

The campground stretches out along Gunnison River among
Cottonwoods and shrubs with several sites teetering on the
river's banks.  It is convenient to State Rt. 135 with the sound
of the river heard from all camping sites.  Sites 6 through 10
are on a dead-end with no turn around.  The campground is well
located for fishing and whitewater sports (on the Gunnison River
and nearby Taylor River).

Turn left at sign onto gravel road (Rt. 867) and go 21 miles to "T" intersection (Forest Rt. 868). Turn right onto Rt. 868 and go 4.7 miles into campground. NOTE: After first 6 miles on Forest Service roads, they become intermittently rough, rocky and single-lane with few turnouts. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,800 ft. The campground, pack it in, pack it out, is a single loop between a talus slope and Big Blue Creek in a dense grove of spruce trees. The campground is convenient to the Uncompahgre Wilderness and a variety of 4WD, horse and hiking trails. NOTE: Although Forest Service literature says this campground is in the Gunnison National Forest, signs leading to the campground and at the campground indicate the campground is in the Uncompahgre National Forest. Turn left onto Rt. 740 and go 3.7 miles to campground sign. Turn right into campground. NOTE: After 1 mile, County Rt. 740 becomes dirt and gravel. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,000 ft. The campground is two small loops next to Cement Creek. Some sites are adjacent to the creek and well shaded by Alder and spruce trees. Turn left at signs onto Rt. 788 (dirt) and go 2.7 miles to another campground sign. Turn left at sign and go 0.7 miles to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 10,400 ft. The campground is located close to a series of small ponds called the Deer Lakes. The camping sites are shaded by Aspen and a few spruce trees. Nearby, Trail 458 provides access to the Powderhorn Wilderness. The sites are spacious with lots of privacy. Continue straight on Rt. 742 for another 7.6 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign into campground. NOTE: Last 6 miles of Forest Rt. 742 is dirt. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,600 ft. The campground's name comes from the days when this location served as a dinner stop for the Denver to Aspen stage coach line. The campground stretches along the Taylor River with most camping sites having the river on one side and a vista of the Sawatch Mountain Range on the other. There are many dispersed camping areas along Taylor River (Forest Rt. 742). Firewood is available for a fee. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. Continue straight on Rt. 742 for another 14.4 miles to campground sign. Turn left into campground. NOTE: The last 12.8 miles of Forest Rt. 742 is dirt. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,800 ft. The campground stretches along the base of a spruce-covered hillside overlooking a spacious sagebrush valley and Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. The campground is convenient to several OHV trails. The campground is popular for anglers and OHV enthusiasts. There are many dispersed camping areas along Forest Rt. 742 and the Taylor River. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 6,500 ft. The campground stretches out along Anthracite Creek under mixed woods featuring mature Blue spruce. Berry bushes abound and the creek can be heard throughout campground. The campground appears undiscovered. Bear right at signs onto Rt. 826 and go 2.6 miles to campground. NOTE: After 1.6 miles, roadways become dirt. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 10,000 ft. The campground is a large single loop above the northwest shore of Lake Irwin. Most camping sites have a view of the Ruby Range or the lake. Spruce trees and wildflowers are abundant. Because there is little understory, some sites have privacy while others are adequate. Many sites have an incredible view of the reservoir and Sawatch Mountain Range. Firewood is available for a fee. Turn right at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 8,800 ft. The campground is divided into two sections (0.1 miles apart) across County Rt. 742 from the floatable Taylor River. The trees are mostly Lodgepole with little understory providing no privacy between sites. The upper or eastern section has no water. Traffic noise from County Rt. 742 may "drown" out the majestic sounds of the river at some sites. The campground is well located for rock climbing, whitewater sports, hiking and fishing activities. CAMPGROUND NAME: Lost Lake VISIT DATE: 07/20/1999 UPDATE DATE: 7/22/2014 STATE: Colorado REGION: Rocky Mountain RANGER DISTRICT: Paonia NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Paonia RESERVATIONS: No DIRECTIONS: In Paonia, CO, at intersection of State Rts. 133 and 187, take Rt. 133 east 14.9 miles to a Crested Butte sign (County Rd. 12). Turn right at sign onto Rt. 12 (toward Kebler Pass) and go 17.8 miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 706). Turn right at sign onto Rt. 706 and go 2.4 miles to campground. NOTE: The last 9.2 miles of County Rd. 12 are dirt and gravel. Forest Rt. 706 is unpaved, narrow and maybe rough in places. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,300 ft. The campground stretches around half of Lost Lake Slough among spruce trees and wildflowers and has two unnamed sections. The smaller section doubles as a picnic area and equestrian camping area. Campers without horses are welcomed in the whole campground but equestrian campers are permitted only in this section. Beside horses, "equestrian" also includes llama, goats, pot bellied pigs, etc; confirm with ranger district office. Some sites have view of lake with Beckwith Mountains in the background. The campground is just west of Slumgullion Pass (11,530 ft.) and is composed of two sections among a dense stand of mature spruce trees. The campground is split by Forest Rt. 788 with the section on the left composed of the pull-throughs but no water. The section on the right has water and most of the tent sites. The term "slumgullion" is used to describe slow-moving landslides. Camping sites 4 and 5 are on a dead-end spur with no turn around. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,800 ft. The campground is composed of three loops with Timichi Creek running alongside each loop. Aspen and spruce trees provide shade for most sites while a thick understory of wildflowers and shrubs provide color and privacy between sites. Hummingbirds abound with their whirling motion. This combined with the sounds of the fast-moving creek and wind through the trees makes this campground a pleasant place to camp. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. The campground, pack it in, pack it out, is located along Soap Creek among mature Ponderosa and spruce trees near the West Elk Wilderness. Chipmunks, squirrels and Hummingbirds abound throughout the campground. The tent sites (all walk-in) have delightful vistas of towering cliffs.
