Up Sumpter Valley Railway Slideshow

On August 18, 1890, the Sumpter Valley Railway of Oregon was incorporated by David Eccles and four others. The Sumpter Valley Railway ran from 1891 to 1947. During its 57-year history the Sumpter Valley Railway (SVR) was a vital part of the area's settlement and development. In 1970 a small group of Baker County residents came together to discuss the formation of a non-profit organization "dedicated to the acquiring, restoring , preserving, maintaining and operating a portion of the abandoned SVR." By 1971 this group, Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration, Inc. (SVRR), purchased a No. 3 Heilser geared locomotive and by 1976, with membership growing, the number of disbelievers was shrinking. Today, the SVR operates along a five-mile stretch of track between McEwen and Sumpter on weekends and holidays throughout the summer months and the SVRR has plans for more. Plans include restoration of another recovered locomotive, laying track from McEwen to the Union Creek campground in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest on Phillips Reservoir, and more. The following pictures were taken during the authors visit to the restored Sumpter Valley Railroad and Sumpter Valley Dredge.
