Burls tend to be darker and harder than the parent tree. But that does not make them stronger. In fact, the twisted grain of a burl makes it very difficult to dry without cracking and a challenge to carve. It requires a great deal of patience, practice, and insight to work with burl and create the wondrous objects found at "It's a Burl."
