03artist_drive.jpg About a mile from the start of Artists Drive, there is a pull-out with a couple of short but steep trails to an overlook. Looking in one direction are sculpted, multicolored hills but they don't have the dramatic hues the literature talks about. This photograph, taken from the overlook, is toward the opposite direction. You can see the salt flat from Lake Manly and the dark shadow of the Panamint Range. It is hard to judge distances in Death Valley. Seeing how tiny our reliable Suzuki, Squirt, appears from the overlook gives you an idea of how deceiving distance can be.
