DIRECTIONS:
In Rochester, VT, at the intersection of State Routes 73 and 100,
take Rt. 73 west 5.4 miles to Forest Rt. 45.  Turn left onto Rt.
45 (Chittenden Brook Rd.) and go 3.3 miles to campground on left.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
This is a sweet little campground nestled among Sugar maples,
American beech, Yellow birch and other hardwoods in a very hilly
area.  The campground is popular for mountain bikers and campers
wanting a semi-wilderness experience.  The Chittenden Brook
Trail, now called the Campground Loop Trail, accesses the first
long distance trail established in the United States.  It is
called the Long Trail which also accesses the Appalachian Trail
(AT).  The Long Trail, which inspired the AT, runs from
Massachusetts to Canada along the backbone of Vermont's
mountains.  Classified as a National Recreation Trail, the Long
Trail is foot only.

A possible day trip is a drive along the White River Travelway,
a.k.a. State Rt. 100.  Stop at the Rochester Ranger Station for a
brochure.  Another short trip is visiting a bit of history at the 
CCC Camp (F4-VT) interpretive site on State Rt. 73 west of the 
intersection with State Rt. 100.

case, parking aprons are very small.  RVs of any size are not
recommended in this campground.

CAMPGROUND NAME: Hapgood Pond VISIT DATE: 08/23/1995 UPDATE DATE: 3/22/2024 STATE: Vermont REGION: Eastern RANGER DISTRICT: Manchester NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Manchester RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation DIRECTIONS: In Manchester, VT., at the intersection of State Rts. 11 and 30 and U.S. Rt. 7, take State Rt. 11 east 9.8 miles to a "Y" intersection and a sign for Peru. Bear left at the intersection onto Main St. and go.3 miles to another "Y" intersection. Bear left again onto Hapgood Pond Rd and go 1.6 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign, then immediately left again into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 1,500 ft. The campground has a single loop and a short, tent-only spur. The first half dozen campsite are sunny with sites tucked in among young willow and aspen and older hemlock trees. The remaining campsites are in dense woods of balsam fir and other conifers. Raspberry bushes, ferns and other shrub plants provide good to excellent privacy between campsites. A very large groomed grass field between the campground and day use area is good for a number of field games. The campground was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1936 and 1938. A feature of the campground is its canoeing/small boat activities. Consider activities and day trips including: - a cook's night out at Johnny Seesaw's (country inn on State Rt. 11 near Peru, VT - www.jseesaw.com); - the famous Vermont General Store in Weston; - White Rocks National Recreation Area for hiking and views of the Big Branch and Peru Peak Wildernesses; and - the nearby Bromley Mtn. for hiking and amusment park for the family (www.bromley.com). NOTE: Due to the increased incidents of invasive insects and diseases, no out-of-state firewood may be used in the Forest. CAMPGROUND NAME: Moosalamoo VISIT DATE: 08/23/1995 UPDATE DATE: 5/7/2024 STATE: Vermont REGION: Eastern RANGER DISTRICT: Rochester NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Ripton RESERVATIONS: or make on-line reservation DIRECTIONS: In Ripton, VT, at the intersection of State Rt. 125 and Forest Rt. 59, take Rt. 125 east 0.7 miles to Goshen Rd. (Forest Rt. 32). Turn right onto Goshen Rd (dirt) and go 3.2 miles to Forest Rt. 24 (rough dirt road) to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: Elevation is 1,200 ft. The campground is a single loop in a pleasant stand of Sugar maple, American beech, Yellow birch and many other hardwoods. This assortment of trees provides ample shade, contributing to its beauty. Lots of ferns and wildflowers help to provide good privacy between campsites. A large groomed grass field in the middle of the campground's loop is good for a variety of activities. The campground is a good base camp for hikers as it provides access to a network of trails that crisscross the area. Moosalamoo is an Abenaki word meaning "the moose departs" or "he trails the moose." A possible day trip is to Voterbrook Overlook to enjoy a splendid view of Champlain Valley.
