As we travel across the country, more and more places are sellinging re-useable bags. \u00a0Makes good sense, especially if the merchant’s bag has something to promote their business. \u00a0Here’s a posting from 2008 on the topic of re-useable bags and\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

For years I have embarrassed my children and husband by practicing BYOB (a.k.a. Bring Your Own Bag). Now BYOB is becoming a habit for many of us. Occasionally I still get a strange look from non-grocery store associates when I pull out my own bag but lately grocery store cashiers actually thank me for my BYOB habit. Pretty cool.<\/p>\n

The other day, National Geographic\u2019s The Intelligent Traveler blog asked, “April 22: The end of the plastic bag?” Isn\u2019t that a great idea. (Did you know the amount of petroleum used to make 14 plastic bags could drive a car for one mile?) If the idea of BYOB and the elimination of plastic bags interests you, visit Reusablebags.com\u00a0for alternatives to those flimsy bags.<\/p>\n

Maybe you\u2019ll want to support businesses, such as Whole Food Markets, who are actively promoting BYOB. Or you would rather get some reuseable for yourself. The Container Store has a little bag for small purchases and fits nicely in a purse or back pocket, as well as a “big boy” size great for the groceries. There is also the tried and true, always useful, open top tote bags from LL Bean . Or you could make your own. This is an easy pattern<\/a> for making a personalized reusable bag.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a thought – Use the pattern to make a tote bag. Then, on Earth Day, have your children decorate one for a Grandma, Aunt, Uncle, or even themselves. Send me a picture and I\u2019ll post it on this blog.<\/p>\n
