- a hat, wide-brim (all the way around is best);<\/li>\n
- a whistle on a cord;<\/li>\n
- one or two favorite snacks;<\/li>\n
- water bottle or juice bag;<\/li>\n
- plastic collection jar (for bug collectors);<\/li>\n
- notepad and pencil;<\/li>\n
- a small flashlight (LED style would be great);<\/li>\n
- a small compass; and,<\/li>\n
- kid-safe bug repellent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Involve the children in the planning and preparing of meals. Even the youngest children can make a batch of “gorp” by mixing a box of raisins with a bag of nuts, and maybe add some chocolate candy like M&Ms. \u00a0Older children can grill some burgers or make a batch of Camping Pudding.<\/li>\n
- Make the child’s sleeping mat a game board. Use a permanent marking pen to draw a checker board, tic-tac-toe grid, race track or whatever on the sleeping mat. Collect the playing pieces from material around camp.<\/li>\n
- As a memento of your camping vacation, give each children their own little disposable camera or some post cards to mail home.<\/li>\n
- Print out the Bingo card below\u00a0and cut out the four (4) cards. Give one card to each child along with a handful of pennies to cover or pencil to mark out sights seen. (I’ve had this Bingo game for awhile time. I think it come from a Martha Stewart magazine. If so thank you, Martha, for the quiet travel time.)<\/em><\/em>\n

- Track\u00a0Identification\u00a0Game<\/a><\/b>\u00a0– another possible travel time activity but also good to help learn what critters live in and around the campground. [Answers are C,E,D,B,A,F]<\/li>\n
- Forest Wordsearch<\/a><\/b> – this activity should take a little while, at least, I found it a challenge. A good rain day or quiet time activity.<\/li>\n
- Most important — take patience and gather memories, children grow very quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
