Help please. I'm searching for a national forest campground in mid to eastern missouri that can accomodate primitive horse camping or camping with electric hookup (3 horse slant with camping living quarters). Also, can anyone tell me if dogs are allowed on the trails? I'm not too computer savy and all this searching is mind boggling. (I should be out riding!) I'm trying to plan a trip and a combined visit with a family member in Columbia so a few hours from Columbia would be perfect.
Any Missouri experiences you've had I'd appreciate hearing about. Thanks. czurhellen@hotmail.com

For horse campgrounds in the Mark Twain National Forest (only one in Missouri) go to the Mark Twain official website at www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/marktwain/recreation/camping/. Click on those campground names with the horse icon.
Dogs are permitted in national forest campgrounds provided they are leashed and under control. When on the trail, well . . . Good luck.

We ride at Cuivre River State park on Hwy 47 just outside of Troy regularly. That would be somewhere around 80 miles east of Columbia. They have a limited number of campsites, some with electric. I don't know about dogs in the equestrian campsite but they are allowed in the hikers area on a leash. The trails range from easy to fairly steep and rocky. They set the trails up in loops and connectors so you can ride for an hour or most of a day even though there are only around 17 miles of trails total. Vaulted toilets and hydrants. Very enjoyable ridding. Usually has mud in areas around the river & creeks.
