I own a vacation home in the San Bernardino Mountains at Big Bear Lake. The camping is kind of lame up there, being litle more than glorified drive in and drive out sites.

Anybody have any experience with better camping sites in the San Bernardino National Forest? It would be for the family in family tents.

You actually own a cabin at Big Bear, then you owe it to yourself to get familiar with the many nearby campsites. Being that you seem to own a business that sells family tents, you could recommend some nice areas to use your equipment.

Serrano campground, right by the lake, is just about the only campground that is just as you mention, a glorified parking area. However, all the others are more "natural".

Pick up a map at the ranger station, or AAA, and spend at least one night at each of the many campsites. You own a cabin there, you can even visit them and picnic for a daytrip!

When we researched the Big Bear Lake area, we used Serrano as our base camp. I suggest you click on the "National Forests & Campgrounds" tab (upper left) and select San Bernardino. In the look-up table, you'll see many campgrounds listed for Big Bear Lake or Big Bear City. You might check out Pineknot campground as a possibility . . . Fred

Thanks Guys for the reference to the Serrano Camp. Out place is near a large campsite at the base of the Snow Summit ski mountain and that is my primary frame of reference.

I'll get the maps and try your suggestions out.

serrano may be a in/out camp but maybe what your looking for is more of a dry camp.
imho serrano is at the top of the list, when i got there the rangers were raking up the camp next to us. i looked for Any trash and found NONE, not a butt or a plastic bread closer, no trash anywhere. the toilets and showers were quite accessable and clean and well lite at nite. and the sm general store across the little street was well stocked. the rangers drive thru regularly with leaf blowers cleaning the pads, streets and walks and in the evenings drove thru selling their firewood. plenty of uncut
:-)
trees and small animals abound. yes id rate this as great.
now the camp ground at green valley was quite abit different, much older and abused looking, did find trash on grounds, no showers, womans toilet didnt stop flushing and no sink water. many were using mens r/r to shower at sink making floor wet and soapy. pads were in need of repairs. the campers next to us were a little trashy with their stuff blowing thru camp. this looked more standard, unfortunately.
on the other side of the lake at the barton flats camp which are second to serrano, also clean and well maintained but store is futher and not as well stocked. just my $1.43 worth.
