My message, after the fact--don't always rely on existing printed maps or software to get you though your trip. I have numerous software programs, in addition to Delorme and Benchmark atlases, in addition to a few dozen forest service maps. I now have a Megellan eXplorist 100--a lower end GPS device. Not fancy, but works. The Kaibab National Forest map(available at the NF service office in Williams, AZ) lists many forest service roads. However, not all, and not accurately.

For bearing purposes, Ten X campground lies about 4 miles south of Tusayn, and 2 miles south of the Grand Canyon National Park Airport. If camping at Ten X, in 1997, you could hear helicopters coming and going. My mountain biking trip this day, took me on NF service roads on the west side of US 180/AZ 64. I am using software and printed maps to recreate this trip. I am using National Geographics Backroads Explorer, here. Your best bet may be the NF, Kaibab map.

The route starts south of Ten X, on the west side of US 180/AZ64. Forest Road 306 goes to the area around the south end of the GCNP Airport, south end runway. There is a road, leading to a gate, just off of FR 306. This road curls around the south end of the runway. This is a wet, marshy area, but the road was dry. You go up an incline to another gate(gates here keep animals off the runway). Can't tell you a route number here. If you follow this road, it dead ends at the railroad tracks for the Grand Canyon Railway. My topo shows it as ATSF(Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railway). I've take the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams to the South Rim. This point is called the Coconino Curve.

There is no road here. You can walk, or carry your bike along the railbed, north. Eventually, you will intersect FR 328 and Rowe Well Rd. Rowe Well Rd goes to the South Rim. There is a sign stating you are entering Grand Canyon National Park and must pay the admission fee. Around the park boundary, there is Rowe Well Picnic Area. A nice place to grab a bite to eat(hopefully, you brought food and water). The rest of the ride is on FR 328, East, back to Tusayan, and Rt Us 180/AZ 64. It is about 5-6 miles south, back to Ten X.

Miles wise, probably arond 20-25, round trip. The first part of the trip, you will likely encounter a number of dispersed campers. I did not encounter another person on this trip. Sometimes solitude is good! It was around the end of September. Weather was nice--about the end of monsoon season in the Arizona high country. Temps 70's days-40 nights.
