I know that the electrical hook-ups in campgrounds are to plug a whole RV unit in to. Am I correct in presuming that they are NOT to just plug one little appliance in, that the power has to get translated through the RV equipment to do this?

If the rv spot is yours, and the power pedestal has the type of receptacle you need, go ahead and plug in.

There is never a dumb question.
:)

If you so desire, you can plug only one thing into the power pedistal as Korbe stated. Many of the pedistals have outlets just like the ones in your home. If the pedistal is set up for a higher amerage vehicle, it may have the outlet used for High current applications but the voltage is still 110V.

Hope this helps!

Funny you should ask such a question. Fred and I were camping in the Shady Lane section of Cedar Lake Recreation Area in the Ouachita NF and there were a couple of tent campers set up in sites with electric and water hook-ups. The interesting thing was each had a little window-style air conditioners attached to their tents. They had cut an X in the side of their tent, mounted the ac units on a couple of plastic milk boxes and had used duct taped "seal" the seams. They were gone the next day so we didn't get photos - darn.

We only tent camp, and in the summer we always get an electrical site and bring a fan. It is so humid out here in the summer it really makes it comfortable to sleep. We plug in cell phone chargers etc...
