I thought it might be a good idea if we created a "Sticky Note" in this Forum that contains a list of the things that people should bring / wear when going on a day hike in the National Forest (or anywhere else for that matter.)

What do you guys and gals think a smart hiker and thier friends should bring? Also, what should people take into consideration when planning a hike? I'll merge your ideas into a list that anyone can use for their next outing. We have a lot of people with various levels of experience and we can all learn something new from eachother.
:)

I would add to the above:
Hat with a good brim--shades the eyes and keeps the ticks off your neck, sun and rain off your noggin.
Jacket or a wool sweater
Poncho or even a compact, folding umbrella (helps with the sun, too), and the poncho can help to make a temporary shelter if need be.
Space blanket
A couple of spare pairs of socks
Cell phone--leave a message with family or friend telling where you're going, use it if you get lost (assuming there's service)
A disposible lighter for when the matches get wet
Insect repellent

Sorry but what is a "Sam Splint'?

Interesting, no Bear Spray mentioned. Reason?

We include "Poopie bags" (for dogs), TP (for humans), and treking poles.

FYI: Fred carries most of the weight while I pack lunch.

Sam Splint - never heard of that until now. A good idea for sure.

Treking Poles - I always use them for backpacking and we are starting to use them more for hiking.
