Use less water camping

When I moved into my brick-and-stick house in southeast Arizona, a neighbor  really when you camp, desert and tropical landscape, water conservation is a way of life.  Here are some ways we stretch our water:

  • Steam instead of boiling vegetables when possible.  Steaming requires less water and leaves more nutrients.
  • Rinse produce in a basin of water and not under a water tap, using a vegetable brush.
  • Use hand sanitizer to clean hands.
  • For a quick sponge bath use unscented baby wipes.
  • Wash all you dirty dishes than rinse all at the same time in a tub of fresh clear water.
  • Use hot water to wash dishes and fresh cold water for rinsing.  Option: Add a cap full of liquid bleach to rinse water to sanitize.
  • Use the clear rinse water from dinner dishes for bedtime bath.
  • Use paper towels to wipe all debris from your dishes before washing them.
  • While waiting for hot water from the tap, catch the running water in a clean jug or bucket to reuse it.  Maybe you can use for rinsing dishes or flushing toilet.
  • Don’t run the tap while brushing your teeth, shave, or wash your face or hands, conserve water by turning the tap on to just a slow dribble.
  •  Buy and use reusable plastic ice cubes.  Conserved water and chills your drinks.

Always, always, always dispose of water using the “broadcast” method.
