CAMPGROUND NAME: Baumgartner

VISIT DATE: 08/20/2001

STATE: Idaho

REGION: Intermountain

RANGER DISTRICT: Fairfield

NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Pine

RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation

DIRECTIONS:
In Pine, ID, from Nester's Market, take North Pine-Featherville
Rd. east 6.9 miles to the pavement's end. Continue straight (E.
Baumgartner Rd. - dirt) and go 9.3 miles to campground sign.
Turn right at sign and go 0.2 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn
left and go another 0.2 miles to campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 5,300 ft.

The campground is on ground deeded to the Forest Service in 1937
by John Baumgartner, a miner who worked a claim there and two
other nearby locations. The only stipulation was the land must
be made available to the public for camping. The campground,
composed of two unnamed sections, stretches along the South Fork
of Boise River in large Ponderosa pines. Two sections are for
single-family camping while the other is for multi-family
campers. Camp sites in the latter section are all double with
one each table and grille. The campground features a hot
springs-fed pool and a delightful natural swimming hole west of
campground - either one is a treat. Together, these features
make this a special campground. The single-family section at
entrance to campground has the longer parking aprons while the
last section has the shortest.

There are numerous dispersed camp sites along the river for 14.1
miles between Baumgartner and Bowns campgrounds. The area's fly
fishing opportunities are just beginning to be discovered.

Turn right after sign onto Rt. 214 and go 4.3 miles to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 6,600 ft. This campground is one of 37 in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). It is a single loop through a stand of Lodgepole pines on the eastern shore of Redfish Lake. The camp sites adjacent to the lake are next to the "Sockeye Closure Area" where access to the lake is not permitted because of critical sockeye spawning habitat. Because of the dense Lodgepole pines, there is no understory or middlestory. This, plus the nearness of the camp sites, makes for poor privacy. Some camp sites have a view of the lake. Firewood is available for a fee. Hot showers for a fee, gas, laundromat, and pay phones are available in service area at intersection of Forest Rts. 213 and 214. Visit the nearby Redfish Lake Lodge for boat rentals, boat shuttle to Sawtooth Wilderness, trail rides, an afternoon or evening beverage and a cook's night out. Interpretive programs are held during the summer at various locations around the Redfish area. The campground is also a good base camp for day trips into the town of Stanley, Stanley Museum, Sunbeam Hot Springs, and Sawtooth Fish Hatchery. Turn left at sign onto dirt road and go 0.3 miles to campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 6,700 ft. This campground is one of 37 in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). There two unnamed loops just above a bend in the Salmon River. Although none of the camp sites are adjacent to the river, the rushing water can be heard from some of them. The removal of "hazard" trees has made this campground the most accurately named in the SNRA. Often used by campers waiting for a site in the Redfish Lake complex, this campground tends to be less crowded than others in the area. The unobstructed, marvelous views of Mt. Heyburn and other mountains in the Sawtooth Mountain Range from the campground, help to offset its current appearance. People are taking advantage of the magnificent views by using the campground's picnic pavilion for weddings and family reunions. (Check with the ranger station about pavilion availability.) In addition, a stroll along the crystal clear Salmon River in back of the campground is delightful. Just 0.6 miles south of the campground entrance is the turn into the Redfish Lake complex. There, hot showers for a fee, gas, laundromat, and pay phones are available in service area at intersection of Forest Rts. 213 and 214.
